Hi everyone,I just did my bilateral femur surgery at the Paley March 17, 2026. When it comes to my body and health I don’t believe in trying to save cost so I went with whom I believe are the best surgeons with the best aftercare in the world. They were able to insert the Precice 12.5mm internal nails which have a 75lb capacity per leg.
I am 38 with a starting height of 171.5 cm and weigh 185 lbs. My goal is to gain 7-8cm in my femurs. Fortunately compared to my legs I have a long upper body and when sitting I consider myself tall. This is especially noticeable when I am on an airplane and my head sticks above the seat farther than most other men. Gaining length in my legs should only make me look much more proportioned, luckily.
My build is relatively muscular so I am not very flexible at all.
Day 0 – My surgery was 7am, upon waking up the pain wasn’t that bad due to the anesthesia and drugs that were still lingering. However, my legs were so heavy and were basically paralyzed, I could only move my feet and toes, which still had full sensation and mobility. My quads were completely dysfunctional and swollen, I could not feel them at all. My legs are quite thick and muscular so I’m not sure if this contributed to the magnitude of swelling. The pain did get worse into the night but was manageable at around a 5-6 out of 10. But if I moved the pain jumped to an 8-9, especially around my hip where an additional muscle release was required because of how tight my legs were. Otherwise my legs wouldnt have been mobile enough to have the rods inserted.
Day 1 – The day after surgery the pain got worse but was still manageable if I didn’t try to move my legs at all. I regained some sensation back in my quads and I could idly flex them but still had no real strength. PT did some mobility movements with me and tried to get me standing but the best I could do was sit at the edge of the bed for a few seconds before my blood pressure dropped and I had to immediately go back to laying down. Overall my legs were still useless and I required full help from the PT team to even get to the edge of the bed.
Day 2 – This is today, the time of making this post. The pain is surprisingly much better, I’m still taking 10mg oxycodone with Tylenol every 4-6 hours. I have marginally more strength in my legs but still cannot get to the edge of the bed without major assistance, however the process is somewhat easier. I was able to sit on the edge of the bed longer, maybe 2-3 minutes but that was the limit of today’s capability. My blood pressure didn’t drop as low as day 1 but it was still around a low 80/54. I feel that I do have the upper body strength to be able to lift myself up onto the walker but the blood pressure situation is inhibiting with the nausea and dizzinness. They are now pumping me with fluids to see if that will help. Prior to surgery my blood pressure was always on the slightly higher end. Dr Robbins said it’s possible that my muscular legs could be hogging a lot of blood in their swollen state.
I hope tomorrow I’m able to get standing and that the blood pressure baseline is more normal.
Even though I’ve said that the pain is manageable if I’m not moving I must stress thats not path you are supposed to take. You cannot go through this without moving so enduring a higher pain threshold is inevitable and a necessity.
