Hi, I am planning to lengthen my femurs by 6 cm. Some clinics offer the approach that you do one femur first, then you wait until it is fully healed and then you do the other. So basically a staged unilateral approach. Obviously this means having two surgeries instead of one, and two rehabilitation periods and a way longer time commitment in total, which can definitely be considered a disadvantage, but there are also some advantages that should be considered:
1. Due to the fact that you only lengthen one leg at a time, you will always literally have one leg to stand on, making you much more mobile and independent, even after surgery.
2. Physiotherapy (One of the most important parts of safe limb lengthening) will be much easier and effective, as you can fully focus on one leg at a time
3. Increased mobility stimulates better bone healing (allegedly)
4. You will face far less pain, both physically and emotionally. At no point will you feel helpless and frustrated, because you have one fully functional leg. In addition, the body will face much less physical stress because only one leg is broken, and the body can focus all its healing efforts on one leg.
Please let me know what you think about this approach or if you have done it yourself. Maybe I am talking complete nonsense, or maybe it is a valid approach. Thanks in advance 🙂
